To some extent the 'Waterfront' owes a debt of gratitude the the Jacquard club.. The original 'committee' running the 'venue campaign' approached Jon Fry with a request to run regular gigs at the club.. the idea being to raise awareness and, if possible, money to put pressure on the council to provide a decent sized venue for bands to play so that local music fans didn't have to rely on the U.E.A... Jon agreed , with the permission of David Cogman, and later Sandra Cupper, to allow them to put on regular gigs on a monday night at no charge to the 'venue campaign'.. This became a popular event for a year or two with the committee putting on many nationally known, up and coming acts..Also many local bands were given the chance to play.. The campaign was a success as the Waterfront testifies!... One little known fact is that on those monday nights, one of the doormen was one 'Herbie Hide', the heavy weight boxer who later became heavyweight champion of the world for a short time!
